270. The Punk Singer; movie review

THE PUNK SINGER
Cert 15
81 mins
BBFC advice: Strong language, sex references

A work colleague watched The Punk Singer a couple of weeks ago and reckoned it was one of the best music docs he had seen.
And this lad should know ... he's been into underground bands for the past 30 years and litters his Facebook page with pronouncements about acts of which I have never heard.
This, I have to confess, goes for Kathleen Hanna, whom I have since learned, was the feminist lead singer of the likes of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and more lately The Julie Ruin.
Hanna was a cult heroine for more than a decade, known for being her no-holds-barred performances, but disappeared in 2005.
This was particularly mysterious, given Hanna's love of the stage and her commitment to espousing, fearlessly, the feminist cause.
Sini Anderson's documentary strings together archive footage of Hanna, from her early days on the music scene through her bands and political demonstrations.
It peppers its chronology with interviews with her friends and fellow band members and finally comes up to date with Hanna now.
The Punk Singer is insightful and illuminating, even for those who don't know Hanna's work. For fans, it will be a must see.
